1. one of the movable, winglike or fanlike parts of the body of a fish or other aquatic animal. By moving its fins a fish can swim and balance itself in the water. The large fins of a flying fish unfold like a fan and can carry it a little way through the air.
2. a thing shaped or used like a fin. Some aircraft have fins as part of the tailpiece to help balance them in flight.
3. a rubber, paddlelike attachment for the feet, worn by swimmers to gain added propulsion.
4. any one of certain thin, flat, lateral projections in various mechanisms: »

the cooling fins of a radiator.

5. a) a finlike projection on a boat, especially on a submarine. b) = fin keel. (Cf.fin keel)
6. Slang. the hand.
